McGuinty government urged to kill plans to ship 'Ring of Fire' refinery work to China

McGuinty government urged to kill plans to ship 'Ring of Fire' refinery work to China

U.S. multinational Cliffs Natural Resources says it will seek exemption to Ontario Mining Act to ship raw chromite overseas, but Teamsters wants the government to tell foreigners that if you 'mine it here, then refine it here or keep it in the ground'
OTTAWA, Nov. 25, 2011 /CNW/ - Queen's Park will squander huge potential benefits of the so-called "Ring of Fire" mining discovery in the James Bay lowlands if it allows the lion's share of raw materials to be siphoned off and sent to China for refining, says the head of Teamsters Canada Rail Conference Maintenance of Way Employees.
"A senior executive of Cliffs Natural Resources told CBC news this week that it plans to ship much of the raw chromite to Asia for refining and will seek an exemption to the Ontario Mining Act because the law prevents materials mined in Ontario being refined outside Canada," says William Brehl, president of the union representing maintenance workers on several short line railways in Northern Ontario that may carry Ring of Fire minerals.
"Premier Dalton McGuinty's government has called the Ring of Fire the most promising mining opportunity in Canada in a century. We urge his minority government to stand tall, protect Ontario jobs and help Northern Ontario's economy by denying the exemption. If you mine it here, then refine it here or go away and leave it in the ground. We have been urging this for the past year since we first heard about the China plan," Brehl says.
The Ring of Fire, about twice as large as Prince Edward Island, is said to hold one of the world's largest and richest deposits of chromite, the key ingredient in making stainless steel. It is also said to possess nickel, copper, platinum, gold, zinc and magnesium.
Instead of extracting the minerals from beneath the Canadian Shield and shipping them to China - a country not known for its environmental and labor protection laws - the chromite and other materials should be refined in Ontario, creating Ontario jobs and bolstering business for the ONR (Ontario Northland Railway) which is subsidized with Ontario tax dollars, Mr. Brehl says.
"This is a simple win for Ontario. There is infrastructure in Timmins to refine where a former Falconbridge refinery closed recently, there are trained workers there, there is a potential for more jobs in Ontario's North and fewer tax dollars required to subsidize the ONR because shipping the minerals will add needed money to ONR's coffers. There is nothing stopping Premier McGuinty from saying 'no' to the exemption except big powerful multinational corporations who will threaten to take their ball and bat and go home. If the Occupy Movement has taught us anything, it is that sometimes we have to do what is best for people, not what is best for Wall Street financiers and corporations," Mr. Brehl adds.

Webequie First Nation Reaffirms Community Rights in Ring of Fire

Webequie First Nation Reaffirms Community Rights in Ring of Fire

THUNDER BAY, ON, Nov. 23, 2011 /CNW/ - The Chief and Council of Webequie First Nation is reaffirming its community rights and local autonomy with respect to decision-making processes in the Ring of Fire. Today, Webequie First Nation released two independent documents; a Community Position Paper and a Consultation and Accommodation Protocol, which both clarify and outline for industry, government and the public that the membership of Webequie First Nation will determine their own community-led negotiated process as it relates to the traditional, historic, ancestral, and customary areas of Webequie First Nation.
Chief Cornelius Wabasse of Webequie First Nation says; "Following recent reports in the media and consequent enquiries, Webequie First Nation would like to remind all those who wish to work with our First Nation and, particularly commercial entities, that they must have direct engagement and consultation with our First Nation before and above any other agency. We, the Webequie First Nation people, are the primary contact and exclusive decision-makers for our community, not any third party or external organization."
Webequie First Nation is one of the two northern First Nations that will be most directly impacted by the potential mining developments for the Ring of Fire area. Webequie First Nation is a member community of the Matawa First Nations Management Tribal Council, which was created to serve First Nations.
In recent weeks, the Matawa First Nations Management Tribal Council has been promoting a stop order on development in the Ring of Fire and lobbying for a Joint Panel Review Environmental Assessment on behalf of all the regional Matawa First Nations. Webequie First Nation supports regional First Nations' concerns over the current Environmental Assessment process but notes that the Matawa Tribal Council or any other third party, is not a decision-making authority or community voice for Webequie First Nation.
Continues Wabasse; "Matawa First Nations Tribal Council provides our First Nations with important support services but it must be clearly understood that its staff do not represent our First Nation membership on community issues. Industry and government are required to engage directly with our First Nation and it is the Webequie Council through quorum who can legally commit Webequie First Nation to any type of process or agreement that affects its membership."
In addition to establishing Webequie First Nation's position on the Matawa Tribal Council, the Community Position Paper also provides important community information on Industry and Government Protocol, Regional Infrastructure as well as the Discovery Area.
"The purpose of publicly releasing these documents is to help guide industry, government and any other commercial interests through the process of doing business or working collaboratively with our First Nation. We want to demonstrate that there are meaningful paths forward to building positive and mutually beneficial working relationships. We believe that education and awareness are the best way to build understanding and reciprocal respect."
Webequie First Nation has built tremendous community capacity over the past three years to become investment-ready and prepare to take advantage of emerging socio-economic benefits in the Ring of Fire. This capacity includes the establishment of a community-based Webequie Ring of Fire team. Copies of both the Community Position Paper and Consultation and Accommodation Protocol are available upon request through the Webequie First Nation Ring of Fire Office.
Webequie First Nation is a growing Ojibway community located 540 km north of the city of Thunder Bay. Webequie First Nation is the closest community to the discovery areas in the Ring of Fire and it has over 700+ community members, many of which are actively enjoying their traditional cultural practices and harvesting activities.

COAWS Speaks Out

Take time now to assess impacts of mega-mines in Northern Ontario, environmentalists tell federal and Ontario governments

Groups demand greater scrutiny through joint review panel
TORONTO, Nov. 7, 2011 /CNW/ - Today Ecojustice and CPAWS Wildlands League are calling on Federal Environment Minister Peter Kent and Ontario's Minister of the Environment Jim Bradley to appoint an independent joint review panel to assess a proposed mega-mine for chromite in northern Ontario by the American-based Cliffs Resources Company.
The public interest groups are supporting the demand earlier this month by Matawa and Mushkegowuk First Nations that the federal Minister conduct a review panel.
The Cliffs project is the first proposed mine in this vast, intact area. The environmental groups are concerned that mining will cause massive permanent changes to sensitive ecosystems and local communities in Ontario's Far North.
"The cumulative impacts of this project are wholly unknown at this point and approval of the first one will most likely lead to multiple others being developed. Just how much mining can one watershed sustain before its health is compromised?" said Anna Baggio, Director, Conservation Land Use Planning for CPAWS Wildlands League.
Public interest groups have called on governments this year to conduct a regional assessment of mining in Ontario's Ring of Fire area to ensure that the total extent of impacts on the area will be fully considered before mining development proceeds any further.
"Communities and indeed all concerned Canadians need this type of critically important information before massive exploitation of Ring of Fire mineral deposits commences, at the very least we need a joint review panel," says Baggio.
Contrary to the assertions of Cliffs Resources, an environmental assessment by a "joint review panel" would be far superior to the current process of "comprehensive review study" that the federal government has initiated. A joint review panel will avoid having multiple assessment process federally and provincially and will ensure that local First Nations who will be most impacted by this project will have a role in deciding how it can be developed. Additionally, concerned Canadians will be able to participate and provide submissions in public hearings to impartial panel members.
"The Matawa and Mushkegowuk First Nations need a joint review panel in order to address concerns about how this project will impact their communities and the environment," said Justin Duncan, staff lawyer for Ecojustice. "Doing so will ensure those communities have a stronger voice on a project that will transform Ontario's Far North."
The federal and provincial Ministers of the Environment have the discretion to reach an agreement to bump up the environmental assessment of Cliffs Chromite Project to a joint panel review. For example, the Ministers struck a joint review panel for the proposed Marathon platinum and copper mine in August of this year. One of the main reasons for such a decision is public concern. Ecojustice and CPAWS-Wildlands League hope that other members of the public, including other companies operating in the Ring of Fire encourage Canada and Ontario to conduct a more thorough assessment of the project.

Environmental Assessment Starts

Cliffs Chromite Project

Public Comments Invited and Federal Funding Available
OTTAWA, Oct. 17, 2011 /CNW/ - The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency (the Agency) is starting a comprehensive study type of environmental assessment for the proposed Cliffs Chromite Project located in northern Ontario. The Agency invites the public to comment on the project and the conduct of the comprehensive study.
The Agency has prepared the draft Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) Guidelines that identify potential environmental effects to be addressed and information that needs to be included in the proponent's EIS. Public comments on the draft EIS Guidelines are invited and will be reviewed and considered before the document is finalized and issued to the proponent.
The draft EIS Guidelines and more information on this project are available on the Agency's website at www.ceaa-acee.gc.ca (Registry reference number 11-03-63927). The document is available in paper copy by request as well.
All comments received by November 16, 2011 will be considered.
The Agency is also making available $40,000 under its Participant Funding Program to assist groups and individuals to participate in the federal environmental assessment of this project. Funding applications received by November 16, 2011 will be considered.
This is the first of several public comment periods that will occur during the environmental assessment of the project.
The proposed project consists of constructing, operating and eventually decommissioning an open pit/underground chromite ore mine (30 year mine life at a predicted extraction rate of 6,000 to 12,000 tonnes per day) and an ore processing facility. The proposal also includes an integrated transportation system consisting of a new north-south all-season road corridor and a new ferrochrome production facility, which would be located at a different location than the mine site.
This project is also subject to the environmental assessment requirements of the province of Ontario. Canada and Ontario are coordinating the respective environmental assessment processes for the proposed project.
The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency administers the federal environmental assessment process, which identifies the environmental effects of proposed projects and measures to address those effects, in support of sustainable development.

KWG ANNOUNCES NORMAL COURSE ISSUER BID
Montreal, Canada – October 5, 2011 – The KWG Resources Inc. (TSXV: KWG) Board of Directors has authorized the purchase of up to 31.9 million of its common shares by way of normal course purchases on TSX Venture Exchange (“TSXV”), subject to regulatory approval.  KWG intends to file the required notice with the TSXV to obtain such approval as soon as practicable.  The common shares authorized to be purchased, represent 5% of the common shares presently outstanding.
KWG believes that its common shares currently trade in a price range that does not adequately reflect their underlying value based on KWG’s business prospects and strong financial position.  As a result, depending upon future price movements and other factors, KWG believes that its outstanding common shares represent an attractive investment and a desirable use of a portion of its corporate funds.
The purchases may commence two trading days after acceptance by TSXV of KWG’s notice of intention and will be undertaken by Jones Gable and Company Limited as KWG’s agent.  It is expected that the purchases will not presently exceed $500,000 and will terminate not more than one year after the purchases commence, or on such earlier date as KWG may complete its purchases.
Purchases will be made by KWG in accordance with applicable regulatory requirements and the price which KWG will pay for any such common shares will be the market price of such shares at the time of acquisition.  The common shares purchased will be cancelled.
To the knowledge of KWG, no director, senior officer or other insider of KWG currently intends to sell any common shares under this bid.  However, sales by such persons through the facilities of the TSXV may occur if the personal circumstances of any such person change or if any such person makes a decision unrelated to these normal course purchases.  The benefits to any such person whose shares are purchased would be the same as the benefits available to all other holders whose shares are purchased.

Supporting Good Northern Ontario Jobs
Premier Visits Bombardier Plant in Thunder Bay
THUNDER BAY, ON, Sept. 15, 2011 /CNW/ - Premier Dalton McGuinty today highlighted the Ontario Liberal Plan to create and protect jobs in Northern Ontario during a stop in Thunder Bay.
"Ontario Liberals are committed to a strong Northern economy with good Northern Ontario jobs, including right here at Bombardier," said McGuinty. "Our Ontario Liberal Plan is all about creating jobs and strengthening Northern communities."
McGuinty made the comments at the Bombardier manufacturing plant, where the Ontario government's commitment to GO Transit has meant purchases of 150 new coaches between 2004 and 2011 and a recent purchase of 50 coaches.
On Monday, Premier McGuinty announced that the Ontario Liberals will expand GO train service to two-way, full-day service, on all corridors — more than doubling the current number of coaches. All of which supports good jobs for Ontario families living in Thunder Bay.
McGuinty, who was joined by Thunder Bay-Superior North candidate Mike Gravelle and Thunder Bay-Atikokan candidate Bill Mauro, took the opportunity to outline the Ontario Liberal Northern Platform, which includes many elements to create jobs and further strengthen the Northern economy:
  • Supporting Northern jobs by increasing the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund to $110 million and increasing the number of jobs it supports
  • Protecting jobs by reducing industrial electricity rates by 25% through the Northern Industrial Electricity Rate Program, which will be made permanent
  • Keeping the North moving by improving Northern road, rail, and air links
  • Opening new mines — at least eight in the next 10 years
  • Investing in Northern brainpower with a new law school at Lakehead University
  • Attracting new investment and jobs with the development of the Ring of Fire
The Harris-Hudak PCs gutted transit and made a mess of GO Transit in particular. First, they downloaded GO to the municipalities, then uploaded it again. When Tim Hudak was Northern Development Minister in that government, he helped the PCs download $3 billion in costs onto cities and towns, causing property tax hikes and massive cuts to public services. Today, the Hudak PCs have a $14 billion hole in their platform — that means deep cuts that will put our transit, education and health care at risk.
The NDP would introduce a crushing $9 billion in job-killing taxes and impose a moratorium on development north of 51, which would kill the Ring of Fire and destroy jobs in every Northern community.
Both opposition parties would take Ontario off track at the worst time.
"What we've accomplished in the North is nothing short of amazing," said McGuinty. "But there is much more to do and Ontario Liberals have a serious plan to keep building on the progress we've made, together."

No pot of gold here. My calc shows about $90 per tonne. I don't see how that can be economic. Is there a claim fight going on.

CLAIM STAKING:
On June 17, 2011, the Company staked six mineral claims comprising 32 units on open ground that lies directly to the north of Noront claims 4226694 and 4226662 (and directly south of Fancamp Exploration Limited's claims 3012257 and 3012258). These two 16-unit claims were formerly claims 4221148 and 4221149 of MacDonald Mines Exploration Ltd. Another exploration company active in the Ring of Fire has announced that they have staked these claims.
The Company has filed notice with the Mining Recorders Office contesting the validity of the staking by the other company.
Noront also staked another 16-unit mineral claim, further to east. This claim lies directly to the north of Noront's claim 4226616 and lies on the west shore of McFaulds Lake, and was formerly claim 4212366 of MacDonald Mines Exploration Ltd.

Frank McKenna on the passing of Wallace McCain

TORONTO, May 14 /CNW/ - Frank McKenna today issued the following statement on the passing of Wallace McCain:
We salute today the passing of one of this country's greatest entrepreneurs, one of its most generous philanthropists and a wonderful man. Wallace's passing was a huge loss for Canada, particularly his beloved New Brunswick. Julie and I are deeply saddened by Wallace's passing. Our thoughts are with his devoted and loving wife, Margaret, his children Michael, Scott, Martha and Eleanor and their families during this very difficult time.
Wallace was a local hero, a national champion and a global leader. Along with his brother Harrison, he transformed Florenceville, a small town in New Brunswick, into the head office of one of the world's most successful food companies. McCain went on to become an iconic Canadian brand around the world. His second act proved equally successful. Maple Leaf Foods is a multinational company and home to some of Canada's best known and trusted brands.
There will never be another like Wallace McCain. He had a rare combination of energy, passion, business acumen and generosity. Julie and I were privileged to call him a true and wonderful friend. He will be sorely missed.

The recently completed drill program on the Butler Lake Property consisted of 17 diamond drill holes, 7 targeted VMS mineralization, 2 targeted Ni-Cu-PGE mineralization, and 8 targeted vanadium.

Stringer, semi-massive, and massive sulphides consisting of pyrite, pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite, and sphalerite were intersected in 6 of the 7 VMS drill holes. Samples have been submitted to Activation Laboratories Ltd. (ActLabs) in Thunder Bay for analysis, with assay results expected by May 16.
Nickel
Disseminated magmatic sulphides were intersected within each of the 2 Ni-Cu-PGE drill holes. Samples have been submitted to ActLabs for analysis, with assay results expected by May 16.
Vanadium
During the course of the on-going Butler Lake VMS and Nickel exploration programs, geologists noted the elevated presence of vanadium mineralization in some of the drill core. Subsequently, 8 diamond drill holes were selected to test 4 target areas that were thought to contain vanadium mineralization. Using hand held XRF analyzers, it was determined that all 8 drill holes had potentially significant vanadium mineralization. Samples have been submitted to ActLabs for analysis, with test results expected in early May. Given Management's experience with Vanadium Mineralization, samples have already been forwarded to SGS Lakefield for Metallurgical Testing.
Continued Exploration
The Company will be conducting the next phase of drilling on the Butler Lake property once all of the current exploration data and assays have been received and analyzed. Geochemical and geophysical signatures will be utilized to direct the drill program which is anticipated to begin in July, 2011.
Semple-Hulbert Property
Drilling has commenced on the highly prospective Semple-Hulbert Property, located within the traditional territory of the Kasabonika Lake First Nation. The Company recently signed an accord with the Kasabonika Lake First Nation Community and exploration is now proceeding.
The Semple-Hulbert claim group was initially targeted by MacDonald's because it had:
  • The strongest regional magnetic anomaly
  • The strongest regional gravity feature
  • Been mapped as an ultra-mafic feature on regional geology maps
The data compiled to-date for the Semple-Hulbert property has been reviewed by Larry Hulbert, D.Sc. and HudBay Exploration. The primary catalyst for this information was a Geotech VTEM survey of the claim group in 2008, interpreted by Quentin Yarie, P.Geo., Hadyn Butler, P.Geo. and Larry Hulbert, D.Sc.
Geophysical Interpretation of Semple-Hulbert
  • The geophysical data exhibits the characteristics of an intact intrusive body.
  • Modeling of the magnetic data outlined a magnetic feature, which is dimensionally about >10km long by 3-4km wide and extending to at least 3km below surface.
  • 8 electromagnetic targets (conductors) located within the interpreted intrusive are targeted for drilling
  • Within this body the magnetic response varies spatially – suggesting multiple geologic events.
  • This interpretation fits the analogy to the Voisey's Bay deposit; that being multiple magma pulses over time.
  • The modeling also exhibits features similar in nature to four of the Voisey's Bay intrusive components; the Eastern Deeps, Discover Hill Zone, the Ovoid, and the Reid Brook Zone (feeder sheet).
  • Each of these components has an associated group of strongly conductive responses which have been targeted in the upcoming drill program.
Geological Interpretation of Semple-Hulbert
Larry Hulbert, D.Sc. has reviewed the geophysical data for Semple-Hulbert, and has provided the following observations regarding interpreted geology:
In detail, the magnetic fabric of the intrusive body is remarkably similar in size, shape and form to that of the Voisey's Bay Complex in Labrador which hosts world-class Ni-Cu deposits, and was the last significant Ni-Cu discovery in North America (1994).
Magnetically, the mafic-ultramafic rocks underlying the Semple-Hulbert property stand out regionally as a striking magnetic anomaly. Based on the Geological Survey of Canada regional airborne magnetic surveys the intrusive rocks on this property are approximately twice as magnetic as any other known mafic-ultramafic body in the "Ring of Fire" (ROF) including the southeast portion of the ROF which hosts the recently discovered world-class Ni-Cu-PGE, Cr and Fe-Ti-V deposits. Detailed magnetic surveys conducted as part of a VTEM airborne geophysical survey over the Semple-Hulbert property enhanced the significance and understanding of this regional anomaly even further.
The detailed VTEM magnetic survey outlined a "spoon-shaped" intrusion. The East-West trending linear magnetic feature is analogous to the handle of the spoon and geologically is believed to represent a feeder-dyke. At its eastern end it flares out to a width of approximately 3 km and resembles the bowl portion of a spoon. This bowl shaped area represents the main mass of the magmatic chamber. The distinctive magnetic fabric within the main mass of the intrusion clearly defines an internal stratigraphy indicative of magmatic layering as is the case at Voisey's Bay. When one examines the location of the electromagnetic conductors from the VTEM survey relative to the magnetically defined geology the Voisey's Bay analogue and exploration model is most compelling.

OPP goes after UFC, off topic, but interesting

I just had to post this story, along with a litlle history. Last year Ultimate Fighting was illegal in Ontario. There was then a push to allow it in Ontario. After much debate, it was agreed that the events could be held, but obviously the OPP did not like this idea. Did the promotor make the mistake of not hiring off-duty officers for these events? It looks like that to me. What do you think? This same enforcement is being used to charge what we used to refer to as 'bouncers'. They hit the Byward Market recently.

POLICE STRIKE BLOWS DURING UFC ENFORCEMENT

Private Security, Licensing Breaches in Ottawa, South Simcoe, and Toronto

ORILLIA, ON, May 4 /CNW/ - Members of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Anti-Rackets Branch have laid 76 charges in connection with violations of the Private Security and Investigative Services Act (PSISA).

Between April 28th and April 30th, OPP, assisted by members of the South Simcoe Police Service, conducted enforcement initiatives in Ottawa, Bradford-West Gwillimbury, and Toronto, within and near the Ultimate Fighting Championships (UFC) venue.

Eagle Hill Intersects 8.97 g/t Gold Over 8.0 Meters at the Windfall Lake Property and Expands the Caribou Zone

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(Marketwire - May 4, 2011) -Eagle Hill Exploration Corporation(TSX VENTURE:EAG) ("Eagle Hill" or the "Company") is pleased to announce that it has received assay results from an additional 8 drill holes from the Company's 2011 drill program. The results of the drilling confirm the extension of the Caribou Zone to the east and the west and expand Zone 27 further to the east while continuing to prove out the continuity of the gold mineralization on the Windfall Lake Property (the "Windfall Lake Property" or the "Property").
Drill hole EAG-11-258 expanded the Caribou zone by 200 meters to the west with an intersection of 20.82 g/t Au over 2.0 m, only 85 meters below surface. This drill hole targeted a well-defined geophysical conductor extending to the west from the Caribou zone. The Caribou Zone was also extended to the east with drill hole EAG-11-262 that returned 8.97 g/t Au over 8.0 m. This drill hole tested a 150 meter undrilled sector between the Caribou Zone to the west and the W3 Zone to the east and this new intersection suggests that the two zones might be connected. Further drilling during the summer will test this continuity.
EAG-11-259 intersected 7.94 g/t Au over 2.0 meters within the Mink zone at 265 meters below surface. The drilling was also successful at identifying new gold mineralization between the Caribou and Mink Zones with 4.67 g/t Au over 7.0 m (EAG-11-255). New gold mineralization associated with pyrite stockwork was also intersected some 40 meters to the northwest of Zone 27 and returned 5.20 g/t Au over 5.1 m (EAG-11-259).
Eagle Hill has now completed its scheduled 10,000 meter drill program and the assay results of only the last 6 holes are still pending. A map of the Windfall Lake Property outlining the location of the gold zones, drill holes and areas of potential expansion has been posted on Eagle Hill's website at www.eaglehillexploration.com/windfall_lake_property/maps/.

Watch the action this week

I think you may see some moves on the other ROF players. KWG is sitting pretty with the rail line staked and CLF may have to make a move. I'm sure KWG would be very happy being owned 20% by CLF & 20% by the Chinese.
Looking good. FNC is another one to watch with their recent chromite hit. They are going to go back to drill deeper for the Ni etc.

I'm a bit disappointed

There was a lot of talk that we would never sell out cheap, and now this. I think CLF would have paid this. It is less than what they paid for FWR. 86/7*2= 24.57 cents!
I will look to buy today if I can free up some cash. Long term I see this as good news. Let's also see if there is a link to the efforts of the Ontario Government (China tours)

What do Galen Weston Jr. and George Clooney Have in Common?
Canadian poll finds them to be the most gentlemanly, successful men in Canada, and the world; survey also says Canadians are more gentlemanly than Americans
TORONTO, March 31 /CNW/ - Galen Weston Jr. and George Clooney are the epitome of modern gentlemen, according to Canadians surveyed in a recent poll. Of those surveyed, 35 percent thought Galen Weston Jr., executive chairman of Loblaw Companies Limited, was Canada's most gentlemanly, while actor and activist George Clooney was found to be the world's best modern-day example of a true gentleman, with 51 percent of votes.
The informal survey, conducted in Canada for the world-renowned Chivas Regal Scotch whisky, found that it's in good taste to be a modern gentleman. Canadians polled believed that true gentlemen enjoy more success and fulfillment from their careers (67 percent), their family life (89 percent) and their friendships (90 percent), than do other men. A resounding 91 percent of survey respondents also felt that true gentlemen are more attractive to the opposite sex.

Poised to invest in productivity gains and emerging market opportunities

CANADA'S BUSINESS SECTOR READY TO TAKE THE LEAD ON ECONOMIC GROWTH: CIBC

Poised to invest in productivity gains and emerging market opportunities
TORONTO, March 30 /CNW/ - Canadian businesses are poised to take the reins from government and consumers as the leading source of growth in the Canadian economy, finds a new report from CIBC World Markets Inc.
While governments, both federal and provincial, are now singing a tune of restraint and consumers are cutting back on spending growth, Canadian businesses are set to ramp up investments in new plant and equipment with a focus on expanding export opportunities.
"By any measure, the current recovery in capital spending is impressive," says Avery Shenfeld, chief economist at CIBC. "The real return on capital employed is rising and is now currently at just under six per cent-a full point above its long term average, and return on equity is now above 12 per cent."
The report notes that all three of Canada's heavy hitters of capital investment, the oil sands, utilities and the manufacturing sector, are expected to add significantly to capacity, ensuring that business investment remains a consistent source of support for the domestic economy, not just in 2011 but also in the coming years.
While the strong loonie is hurting exports from Canada's manufacturing sector, Mr. Shenfeld notes that the stronger currency is also playing a role in spurring investment in the sector.
